Scope of Position
The position is in the Advanced Optics surface finishing and optical fabrication development group based in Rochester, NY. The individual will be working closely with the optical fabrication development group, division and plant engineering, supporting the business objective of developing novel optical fabrication and metrology technologies.
The role involves application of routine and non-routine measurements and analysis to characterize optical surfaces (lenses, mirrors, prisms etc...), assist with method development, instrument set-ups and calibrations, troubleshooting, organization of data.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain metrology instruments.
- Interact with engineers to understand purpose and contribute to defining measurement.
- Write scripts and programs for data analysis and hardware controls.
- Tailor instrument configuration to meet the measurement needs.
- Maintain detailed records of testing and observations.
- Compile and perform basic data analysis following well defined protocols.
- Support efforts to develop new metrology methods.
- Recognize and troubleshoot instrumentation issues.
- Perform periodic instrument calibration.
- Assist engineers in building new metrology instruments or evaluate performance of commercially available metrology equipment.
Requirements
- Completed or is currently enrolled in a 2 year (AAS) technical degree from an accredited institution (optical, electronic, or computer sciences preferred) and/or Minimum 2 years of optical manufacturing and metrology industry experience.
- Ability to execute measurements accurately, consistently, and thoroughly document what was done.
- Hands-on experience building and calibrating technical equipment.
- Ability to diagnose equipment issues and make minor repairs.
- Ability to program and perform data analysis in Python, Matlab, or other comparable software tools.
- Basic use of CAD software.
- MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) proficiency.
- Good dexterity and hand/eye coordination.
- Comfortable with math and geometry.
Desired Skills
- Hands-on experience building and aligning optical assemblies, acquire metrology data, and system troubleshooting.
- Experience with writing and reading C++ code and modifying applications with C++.
- Knowledgeable about laser and short coherence interferometry, white light profilometry, contact and non-contact profilometry.
- Familiarity with phase analysis software platforms such as Zygo MetroPro, QED technologies QED.Net Toolkit (or equivalent).

The range for this position is $57,964.00 - $79,701.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
