Scope of Position
Broaden and extend Corning Inc.’s competency in the field of opto-mechanical system design, development, and implementation for a variety of applications from prototype to plant floor manufacturing. This will require an individual familiar with developing, promoting, and implementing the following; unique opto-mechanical designs for products and processes, an understanding of micron and sub-micron metrology principles and methods, the ability to develop instrumentation specifications, error budgets, and quantify measurement uncertainty, the ability to use and understand (impact and limitations) state of the art computer modeling and analysis software packages for data analysis and display, support project management from concept to manufacturing transfer at a manufacturing location, be proactive in the propagation of engineering principles and practices within Corning.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Interface and work with the Development, Engineering, and Manufacturing teams that are involved in the innovation and manufacture of new products and processes within Corning’s Advanced Optics’ precision optics, laser optics, and metrology instruments businesses.
- Focus will be on the design, drafting, and analysis of first generation /next generation products, instruments, and machine fixturing/components for robustness of design from the conceptual phase through to verification of performance on first article prototypes.
- Work with other project team members solving difficult mechanical and opto-mechanical engineering issues and general process engineering understanding.
- Interface with outside suppliers on specifying and procuring products, measurement equipment, fixtures and machine components to support project responsibilities.
- Individual must have excellent written and verbal communication skills; proficient data display skills
- Individual must document project results through internal and external reporting means (design reviews, peer reviews, customer presentations, manager review, technical reports, etc.)
- Work as a team member/advisor during the development of new precision instruments, qualification benches, component design for different departments and work groups.
- Estimate time required to accomplish tasks and monitor performance against schedules.
- Individual must be capable of executing project assignments with minimal supervision.
- Travel may be required for routine interaction with internal and external customers and suppliers.
Required Education and Experience
- Minimum bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or adjacent engineering discipline
- Minimum 3-5 years' industry experience in mechanical engineering
- High level of technical curiosity that will enable unique solutions to technical challenges.
- Strong fundamental understanding of mechanical design principles, fixture design, ergonomics, material handling, machining processes, GD&T, CMM inspections, error budgets.
- Ability to function as a technical leader in a highly matrixed project teams.
- Self-starter able to complete objectives and meet timelines independently.
- Decision Making and Problem Solving – able to review data and facts and weigh options using a systematic approach to solve problems (decision making analysis tools, performance budgets, etc.)
- Planning/ Prioritizing/Goal Setting – manage multiple projects; establish plan and use goals to guide actions; schedule people and tasks to complete projects
Desired Skills
- Entrepreneurial and forward thinking approach to work.
- Knowledge of glass and precision manufacturing.
- Experienced with CREO, Solidworks, and Autocad design software.
- Experience with use of standard computer modeling and analysis software packages used in design of mechanical systems.
- Knowledge of precision engineering principles.
- Prior experience moving a new product / manufacturing process from development into manufacturing.
- Demonstrated skills in 2-D and 3-D CAD, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and knowledge of ANSI Y14.5-1994 drafting standard.
- Familiar with state of the art technologies in the following areas: electro-mechanical drive systems, fluid power, pneumatics, robotics, material handling, alignment, part sensing, and safety standards.

The range for this position is $78,902.00 - $108,490.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
