The Team
We are hiring a Materials Systems & Application Engineer as part of our Materials & Chemistry Network of Excellence Team, which is part of our Global Advanced Technology Organization. The mission of the Materials & Chemistry Network of Excellence is to enable product innovation and differentiation through leading-edge materials and chemistry technologies. We do this by leveraging internal expertise and external partners to accelerate technology implementation and translation across Trane Technologies strategic business units.
The Role
As a Materials Systems & Application Engineer within our Materials & Chemistry network, you will be instrumental in advancing and integrating cutting-edge materials and material-based technologies. Your primary focus will be on the development and strategic deployment of material-based technologies and data into our business unit's product lines. You will spearhead our internal strategy for materials data management, collaborating closely with materials experts, design teams, and other stakeholders to establish standardized processes for validating, utilizing, storing, and retrieving material data. In alignment with our Model-Based Engineering (MBE) strategy, you will expand our material data platform to meet the needs of various cross-functional groups and introduce future capabilities. Additionally, you will create and maintain technology roadmaps that identify opportunities and address gaps in the additive manufacturing space, ensuring the maturation of materials and technologies essential for their application within our strategic business units.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (others may be added):
- Oversee and deliver on key objectives for the application of materials in new product development, quality and reliability projects, and cost improvement initiatives involving various material types used in HVAC products.
- Develop and lead the strategy for material data management, ensuring alignment with business goals and key initiatives such as Model-Based Engineering (MBE) and Sustainability.
- Create and implement standard procedures and workflows for material data management to maintain a single source of truth for critical material data across the organization. Manage the system for storing and sharing material data between subject matter experts (SMEs) and data users.
- Establish and enforce data management protocols and standards to ensure efficient and effective use of material data.
- Collaborate with internal modeling and IT teams to develop strategies for utilizing AI and machine learning tools for material data. Identify and establish external partnerships to advance this strategy and leverage external funding opportunities to mature critical technologies.
- Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive additive manufacturing (AM) strategy, setting short-term and long-term goals, including key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure success. Develop technology roadmaps that address gaps and opportunities, aligning with SBU product roadmaps.
- Identify and assess emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in additive manufacturing to keep the company at the industry's forefront. Build and maintain strong relationships with external partners, including suppliers, research institutions, and industry consortia, to support the company's AM initiatives.
- Implement and integrate matured technologies and capabilities into new product development programs.
- Manage multiple projects concurrently while also addressing short-term sustaining engineering needs, such as failure analysis, supply disruptions, quality issues, and general consulting.
- Utilize appropriate analytical and testing methods in designing parts, selecting suitable manufacturing materials and processes, and creating test plans to ensure products meet or exceed customer requirements.
- Conduct technical design reviews as part of the product development process and coordinate with external suppliers and partners on technical requirements and deliverables.
- Promote sustainability by using tools that optimize part designs to minimize waste, evaluating sustainable materials for each application, and identifying and maturing new technologies to reduce the company's carbon footprint.
- Travel up to 25%, including international travel, may be required.
