Scope of Position
The position is in the Advanced Optics development based in Corning, NY. The candidate will be working with technical experts from Research, Development and Engineering as well as IP legal team located in Corning, NY & Canton, NY.
This role will be responsible to lead technology delivery for a new manufacturing platform in AO. This will include leading cross-functional technical teams (research, development, engineering, IP) and close engagement with manufacturing in complex technical workstreams. The candidate will be responsible to develop and maintain a scientific network inside and outside of the corporation to enable technical delivery.
Responsible to lead, identify, develop and deploy materials, process technologies, and fundamentals including interface chemistry reactions in dynamic processing and related characterization to deliver technology for new manufacturing platforms for Advanced Optics product portfolio (optical materials, optical products).
The role is responsible for leading technology delivery and transforming processes to meet more challenging product attributes. The role includes leading the generation of related fundamental understanding and providing technology expertise in materials and processes. In addition, knowledge of optical glass and crystalline materials and the processes for manufacturing, measurements/metrology as well as mechanistic defect understanding provides additional advantage. Knowledge and experience to lead the team through the use of hypothesis-driven structured problem-solving methods such as root cause analyses, failure mode analysis, DOE’s, etc. as well as objective decision analysis tools such as KT are highly desirable.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Lead cross-functional technology program teams to deliver new manufacturing platform capabilities, processes for optical materials to Advanced Optics
- Interface with internal technical community as well as commercial and manufacturing leads and externally with vendors, customers and industry leaders
- Participate with program leadership to deliver business hypothesis, foundational assumptions, solve key problems, make decisions, an actionable strategy and business case for new manufacturing platform and/or transformational processes
- Integrate a cross-functional technical team that have been assembled to develop, design, build and optimize manufacturing capability (platform and processes)
- Actively manage progress and risks to proactively mitigate critical barriers and deliver program on time.
- Work in a team-based environment and participate on a highly-matrixed program team
- Develop a high-level of fundamental understanding of the process and capabilities to enable the deliver a cost-effective platform and related products
- Understand how to integrate available technologies and processes to develop into robust next generation platform, process and solutions
- Be responsible for technical direction, estimating costs, defining scope, budget and schedule
- Be responsible for identification of technical resources necessary to complete the deliverables successfully
- Deliver executive-level communication materials (presentations, white papers, etc.) on regular basis to effectively communicate risk and progress to stakeholders
Domestic travel required: approximately 50% – including frequent travel to Canton, NY
Requirements
- Ph.D. Material Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent
- 15+ years industrial R&D experience
- Demonstrated deep knowledge and skills in understanding material system(s), chemistry and physics of interfaces and solving the related problem statements
- Experienced in successful development and delivery of new products and/or fully integrated process into manufacturing
- Ability to conduct and lead material and process development for specialized product applications
- Demonstrated leadership capability for solving complex materials / process problems including problem definition, using first principles and route cause analysis methodology
- Ability to make data-driven decisions by combining analytical thinking with high-level judgment
- Ability to multitask and prioritize work in a dynamic environment, and define measurable criteria to define relevant process parameters and process window to address product attributes
- Ability to establish strategy and set direction for delivery and demonstrated leadership experience to achieve results through a highly matrixed team (internal and external)
- Ability to establish and maintain deep technical engagement with customers and other industry thought-leaders
- Ability to interface with senior leadership and provide clear concise program vision, strategies, resources needs, and updates
- Effective at planning and directing deliverables, schedules and budgets for multiple work-streams
- Ability to influence - change the thinking of, or gain acceptance of, others in sensitive situations
- Ability to effectively leverage external entities (for equipment, systems, etc.)
Desired Skills
- Demonstrated results developing and delivering step change innovations to engineering &/or manufacturing
- Knowledge expert in semiconductor industry and operations
- Deep knowledge of Corning’s manufacturing processes, especially in glass and ceramics including optical materials and semiconductor products
- Demonstrated experiences in process and manufacturing operations
- Demonstrated experience with Corning Innovation process
- Proven ability and experience to lead complex cross-functional programs and teams

The range for this position is $183,877.00 - $252,831.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
